DIRECT SUPPORT STAFF POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Position Title: Direct Support Staff
Reports to: Supervisor
Exempt: No
General Statement of Duties:
Direct Support Staff provide direct care of clients in community residential programs; implementation and completion of all required documentation pertaining to the individual's person centered plan, as well as Real Life Living Services' policies and procedures and licensing requirements. Direct Support Staff perform any and all tasks necessary for the operation and maintenance of the residential setting, including but not limited to the following: housekeeping, medical appointments, maintaining equipment, completing routine vehicle and home maintenance. Under the direct supervision of the assigned Supervisor, the Direct Support Staff will have the responsibility of ensuring the daily living supports are carried out for every client following the standards set forth by Real Life Living Services, Department of Community Health, Family Independence Agency and all other regulatory bodies.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Eighteen (18) years of age or older.
- Successful Completion of the following personnel hiring requirements at the time of hire.
- Physical examination, post offer of hire, signed by a licensed physician at a company designated clinic, negative TB test or chest x-ray within the last three years- NOTE: physical examination and TB test or chest x-ray must be kept current according to agency policy.
- Official high school transcripts or diploma or equivalent (GED) verifying graduation.
- Three verifiable work/professional references dated within one year.
- A valid unrestricted Michigan drivers license, a safe driving record per agency policy and approved by insurance carrier standards is required to drive consumers in agency or personal vehicles.
- Completion of the Employment Eligibility Verification form I-9, criminal history check, Nurse Aide Registry check, Office of Recipient Rights check.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities including but not limited to the following:

- Direct care of clients, including but not limited to assisting with grooming, feeding, bathing, toileting, dressing, education and training, at the level indicated by the person centered plan. This may include extensive two person lifting bending and carrying.
- Implement consumers goal plans as indicated in the person centered plan, ensure complete documentation in a timely manner. Carry out any specialized needs as determined by the individual's person centered plan and Real Life Living Services.
- Supervise consumers at all times to the level indicated in the residential setting and community to ensure a safe environment and provide active treatment.
- Ensuring that individual needs are addressed in accordance with Real Life Living Services policies and consistent with the principles of person centered services.
- Be a strong role model and advocate for consumers at all times.
- Provide individuals with requested supports, including supporting individuals in managing personal finances, meeting nutritional and personal care needs, medical needs and recreational / community integration needs.
- Assure emergency supports are available.
- Provide a supportive individualized atmosphere.
- Transport consumers to appointments, day program activities, work, community activities, and emergencies day and night.
- Communicate in a professional, positive and respectful way with the consumer, their family /guardian, support staff and the public.
- Utilize good judgment in providing consumer care and for providing consumer safety.
- Respect and protect the rights of all consumers as outlined in the Mental Health Code and Real Life Living Services policies and procedures.
- Report promptly all maintenance and repair needs regarding the residential setting and program vehicle to the assigned supervisor.
- Immediately report all client and staff injuries to the assigned supervisor.
- Know all the emergency procedures for fire evacuation, severe weather, injury accidents and other emergencies such as the need to perform CPR and First Aid that may arise.
- Attend all required staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Participate as a full member of the support team in the person centered planning meeting.
- Assure supplies and equipment are available to provide needed and requested supports.
- Perform other duties as assigned, which may include extensive lifting, bending, carrying, stooping, and cleaning.
Preferred Knowledge and Abilities:
Language Skills
The ability to communicate, verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from individuals and groups.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a wide variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety if instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Unrestricted Michigan Driver's License
Required training certificates within specified time frame per Real Life Living Services policy.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear; and smell. The employee may occasionally help assist in lifting and / or moving up to 200 pounds.
